Finding Better Windows

Three Tips To Help Seal And Insulate New Replacement Windows

If you want your home to be more energy efficient, you may be spending money on improvements like replacement windows. This can be good, but only if you also seal and insulate the windows as needed. This is a job that you may want to do yourself to ensure that your home is airtight. Here are some tips to help you with sealing and insulating replacement windows and doors:

1. Repair And Replace Damaged Trim Around Window Casings

Around the old window casings in your home, you can expect to find damage that needs to be repaired. To find damage, go around your home with a putty knife and poke where you see excessive wear. If the wood is soft or flakes apart, this is an area that needs to be repaired. Replace the wood trim or fill it in with putty to repair the damage. This is something that can help stop drafts and air leaks in your home.

2. Caulk And Paint Your Windows After Replacements Are Installed

After you have repaired all the trim and woodwork, you will want to caulk and paint the windows to seal them up. You will first want to sand off any damaged paint and caulk any cracks where pieces of wood are joined together. Give the caulk enough time to dry, and paint the windows with a coat of exterior paint. You may want to do two coats of paint for a good seal and protection from weathering.

3. Insulate Between Window Casing And Wood Framing

Many older homes may also lack insulation between the existing window casing and wood framing. To check if you have insulation around your windows, remove a piece of interior trim. If there is no insulation, get a roll of batten insulation and cut it into thin strips. Use a putty knife to stuff the insulation in these cavities. Do this for all the windows in your home. You can also add a thin bead of caulking around the interior trim to make sure it is completely airtight. Do not use spray foam for this because it expands and can damage wood trim around windows.

These tips can help you insulate and seal your new windows. If you are ready to replace the windows in your home, contact a window contractor, then get in touch with a window treatment specialist to install energy-efficient blinds for your newly sealed windows.
