Front Door Choices: Making Your Home More Inviting

The look of your front door can make or break your home's first impression on visitors or even those just passing by. If your current door is indistinctive, then it is time to remedy the situation. Choosing the right material and color can set your house apart from the other homes on the block.

Materials

Wood is a classic and beautiful choice. A wood door certainly makes a statement, although it also requires slightly more maintenance than other materials in order to keep the finish dent free and shining. Most wood doors consist of wood veneers applied to a solid wood or steel core. You can also purchase solid mahogany, oak, or other wood doors that become architectural assets to your home.

An all steel door usually costs less but is more durable. It is hard to dent or warp. These doors also often contain insulation that makes them quite energy efficient. Their design is usually pretty basic, but they are easy to "dress up" with paint.

Fiberglass doors are inexpensive and durable. They require almost no maintenance and can handle the most demanding of climates. Some have finishes that mimic more expensive materials, such as wood.

Color

If you choose a less expensive material like steel, you can spruce it up by using the right color. Consider going bold with a shade that complements your home's exterior color but also stands out. Red is a sure-fire  attention-getter, and when paired with a white, gray, blue, or other neutral colored exterior, it pops without overwhelming the look of your home. Orange, green, or other vibrant colors can also make a statement without appearing garish. Think of your door as you would a clothing accessory. If you choose a teal door and hate the look, then you have really only lost the cost of a bucket of paint and a few hours of your time.

Your front door represents more than just a way to enter your home. It makes a statement about your style and can either welcome people or bore them. A wooden door is always a classic and beautiful choice, but other materials can also be attractive and energy-efficient. If you choose a basic door style, you can certainly dress it up with a coat or two of vibrant paint. Free yourself from neutral doors and experiment with color. Your house will stand out from the neighbors and offer you a cheery greeting whenever you return home.
