Finding Better Windows

3 Ways To Prevent Birds From Flying Into Your Windows

There are few things more jarring than a sudden thud on the windows of your home in the middle of the day. You carefully peel back the curtains or blinds, only to see a bit of smudged glass. Perhaps you even spot the culprit: a weary, possibly concussed dove stumbling around your porch. If you hear this sound more often than you'd like, chances are you're pretty desperate for a solution to such a complicated problem. In fact, scientists believe the birds slamming into windows is responsible for up to one billion deaths per year in the US alone. To fix the issue, it's important to understand why it's a problem.

Why Do Birds Fly Into Windows?

While there could be many reasons for the bird strikes, chances are the glass is reflecting a nearby tree or bush. Birds don't see glass, so this looks like just another place to fly for them. This is a common problem because most people place their bird feeders close to a window. While moving the feeder can solve the problem temporarily, if it is a common hangout for the birds, they will more than likely continue their dive-bombing. Looking into more effective options will keep your windows and the bird population looking good.

How Can You Prevent Birds Dying and Window Damage?

Since the reflection is what calls to the birds, dulling the glass will prevent this. Using things like plastic cling wrap, vegetable oil, or even fake snow dull the reflection enough to keep the birds away. Obviously, these are not the cleanest options, which is something to keep in mind when deciding on a method. However, the fake snow is seasonal and could be used during the winter months without being too much of an eyesore.

Probably the most effective way to keep the birds from slamming themselves into oblivion is using mesh netting or a shade screen in front of the problem windows. This allows the birds to effectively bounce off of the mesh unharmed. The smaller the mesh, the better as this will reduce the chances of a beak or leg getting caught and trapping them. While this may not the perfect solution if aesthetics is important to you, it is effective 100% of the time. If you do not wish to purchase a large roll of netting, purchasing old window screens or the old netting inside of windows can be fastened together and used just as easily.

For some people, this issue will rarely come up. For others, however, this issue is commonplace and happens at least once or twice a week. Keeping the birds around is important for many people. They enjoy having the feeders, enjoy the bird population, and want to keep them around. Making a safe space for them to be will bring you and them lasting enjoyment.
