Finding Better Windows

How To Improve Your Apartment Windows

Apartment owners need to think about their property in different terms than homeowners. That is, an apartment require some different maintenance than owning a home. Also, the most practical and cost-efficient home improvement projects are not necessarily going to be the most practical and time-efficient apartment improvement projects. For example, in most apartments, you won't even be allowed to paint the exterior or update the window. In fact, most exterior windows are going to be less effective, even if they are allowed. That is, if other apartments in your complex are not similarly maintained or upgraded on the outside with new windows, your window upgrades aren't going to be as worthwhile.

But window upgrades are still very smart. That is, you can probably benefit by improving the energy efficiency of your fixtures. This can be done in a variety of ways by adding insulation and protection to the interior side of your window fixtures.

Interior Window Treatments

Updating your interior window treatments is a great way to not only give your interior a nice new style but also to help with energy efficiency and insulation. Since you don't have the option of replacing your window fixtures when you live in an apartment, you can add custom window treatments that can be very effective in many ways. For example, blackout blinds can block the sun and prove to be very helpful during the summer. These are very helpful in relentlessly sunny climates. Blocking the sun hitting your interior is going to help keep your inside much cooler. Additionally, solar blinds can block out a little less sun but still let some light into the window. These are great in moderate climates.

Window films can also be added to your glass panes. These films reduce heat transfer, so they are helpful during both the coldest and hottest seasons.

Weatherstripping and Insulation

Smart apartment owners will also upgrade their windows by having an insulation specialist weatherproof their windows (and doors). This includes adding weatherstripping to all windows and doors while possibly adding insulation to the hollow casing of the fixture. Adding insulation to the casings is obviously a much more involved project that costs more money and it is only necessary in extreme climates.

Basically, there a few things that you can do to the interior of the windows in your apartment to increase their functionality, efficiency, and style. These are much cheaper than most exterior upgrades.
