Finding Better Windows

What Are Your Options For Residential Window Styles?

It can be an exciting time to pick new windows for your home. There are many different styles out there, so you can really mix things up and go with a totally different style that better suits your needs. It will help to have an overview of the different types of window styles before you make a final decision.

Single- And Double-Hung Windows

A classic style of window is the single-hung model. It has a lower and upper sash, with the latter being permanently fixed in the upper position. Only the lower sash can open and close to let in outside air. Meanwhile, a double-hung window allows both sashes to change positions.

The main benefit of a single-hung window is that it is cheaper than a double-hung window. If you were to compare identical windows in terms of material and size, the single-hung model will be more affordable due to having fewer parts of that upper sash to move. A double-hung window may be beneficial if you want to open a window from the top so that kids and pets can not push against the screen and to tilt the window inward to clean the glass.

Casement Windows

What makes casement windows unique is that they open with a hinge that cranks the windows outward. Since there is no sash between window panes, a casement window can provide an unobstructed view of the outside. The style also works great in either modern or contemporary style homes as well.

Many people seek out casement windows because they create an airtight seal. When you close the window, it pulls in toward the frame until it is secure. Then a lock will latch onto the window and pull it further in for additional tightness.

Sliding Windows

A sliding window is essentially like a horizontal single or double-hung window. However, the main differences are the parts that allow the window to open and close. Double-hung windows allow the sash to stay in the proper position when opened partially. Sliding windows do not have to deal with this because gravity holds the window in place. A sliding window can also have a short profile that makes it great for a basement environment.

Awning Windows

An awning window is like a double-hung window, but it has a hinge that allows the window to point outward. It makes the window look like an actual awning, where rain will fall off the surface and be directed away from your home. They offer great ventilation when compared to other types of windows and will allow for multiple sashes to be open at once.
